HOW TO DETERMINE YOUR SKIN TYPE

If you're like me, you've probably been wondering how you would determine your skin type. Knowing your skin type is the most important step to understand in caring for your skin. Your skin is your body's largest organ and it is as complex and intelligent as any other vital organ. Knowing your skin type will help you choose the right options that will balance your skin resulting in a healthier, radiant complexion. Skin type is more of a spectrum than a group and everyone's skin falls somewhere on the spectrum of either normal, dry, oily, combination or sensitive skin. Every persons skin is unique and skin type can change throughout the years                                                            GUIDE TO SKIN TYPE OILY SKIN: You know you  have oily skin if your skin constantly looks greasy and shiny within hours of cleansing. oily skin has large pores and is prone to acne and breakouts, this is due the excess sebum (natural oil produced by your skin which helps

Oily skin care routine

Hi guys, this is a continuation of my skin care series. Last week I wrote a post on how to determine skin type I strongly recommend that you read that first  https://mybloomdairies.blogspot.com/2019/11/how-to-determine-your-skin-type.html
This is my second post on the skin care series. If you have an oily skin like I do you will agree with me that while a glossy sheer is gorgeous on your hair and nails it is certainly not appealing on your face. Oily skin implies that your skin has overactive sebaceous gland which produces more sebum (oil) than you actually need this makes your pores large , makes you prone to blackheads and acne and let's not forget about the midday shine. The good news about oily skin is that your risk of getting fine lines and wrinkles are significantly reduced. So you see having oily skin isn't all that bad, I have put together a day and night skin care regimen to alleviate your skin care woes.

DAY TIME ROUTINE

  1. Cleanser : oily skin cannot go without cleansing, start your day with cleansing your face with a gentle cleanser. The best cleansers for oily skin are cleansers that contains salicylic acid
  2. Exfoliation : Exfoliate regularly two or three times a week to remove dead skin cells. Exfoliants can be chemical such as AHA and BHA which boost cell turnover adding radiance to dull skin or physical exfoliants like sugar or salt scrubs which help to refine skin texture
  3. Toner : Some people believe toner can be skipped, I believe otherwise. Think of your skin as a dry sponge, if you try to put heavy cream on it , a brittle dry sponge won't accept it if you however wet the sponge first, the cream will sink in more easily and that's exactly why toners are great addition to your skin care routine. Use hydrating types of toner and stay clear of astringent.
  4. Targeted treatments : This is when you use serums, essence and ampoules. Your skin already produces oil so you can use this step to tackle whatever skin concern you have in a targeted way, your skin needs hydration? Use an hydrating treatment ; you're tackling fine lines? Use anti-aging treatments; you want to brighten your skin ? Use a brightening treatment. But remember to stick to a more watery, lightweight treatment that absorbs easily because your skin already produces oil.
  5. Moisturizer : Just because your skin is producing extra oil doesn't mean you should forgo moisturizers a mistake many people with oily skin make. Moisturizers can be lotions, facial oil, emulsions, creams , gel creams or sleeping pack. As a person with an oily skin use emulsions ( light moisturizer with tiny droplets of oil suspended in a water base) or gel creams because they are water based which will help to minimize clogged pores.
  6. Sunscreen : In this part of the world where I'm from, we don't have time for sunscreen and sunscreen is very important when it comes to skin care. It is the step 6,7,8,9 and 10 because you have to keep on applying and applying. Everything  we've covered from cleansing to moisturizing are ways to maintain and correct damage that's already been done to your skin, sunscreen is important because it's all about prevention. Do not cut corners when it comes to sun protection always finish your day time routine with a sunscreen to protect your skin from UV rays, use a sunscreen rated at least SPF 30. I'd write a post on sunscreen to elaborate on how it works.

NIGHT TIME ROUTINE
  1. Cleanser : Double cleansing at night will do you a lot of good as a girl with oily skin whether you're wearing makeup or not. Start with a oil based cleanser which will help dissolve excess sebum and makeup easily and smoothly then follow up with a water based cleanser to cleanse your skin
  2. Toner : Always prep your skin with a toner, you can choose to skip this step but remember the sponge analogy I gave earlier
  3. Exfoliation : This is not necessary if you've already exfoliated during the daytime. You opt to exfoliate either during the day or night whichever you prefer but remember only two or three times a week so you won't strip your skin bare
  4. Sheet mask : Try using sheet mask once or twice a week. Sheet mask are basically cut fabrics soaked in light serums that contain variety of skin healthy ingredients. There are sheet mask for every skin concern moisturizing, anti-aging, purifying, repairing, you name it. Choose a sheet mask that addresses your specific skin concern.
  5. Targeted treatment : On days you use sheet mask you can skip this step because sheet masks are serums on sheets
  6. Moisturizer and eye cream : Always keep your skin moisturized at night and use eye cream to eliminate dark circles
  7. Lip balm : Our lips do not have sebaceous glands so even people with oily skin can get dry lips. For a smooth lips in the morning moisturize your lips with a thick layer of lip balm

That's the end of skin care routine for oily skin. Next post on skin care routine will be skin care regimen for dry skin.
